Discovery Saturday + Family Workshops

Saturday, May 26th 10-2pm

Discover something new at Discovery Saturdays. These workshops are designed to be enjoyed together with friends and family of all ages. The fourth Saturday of every month, a 90 minute AM and PM workshop will focus on topics such as comic drawing, trying you hand at the pottery wheel and much more. Workshops are led by our teaching artists or science educators and offer a great introduction to the LASC or a unique way entertain family and friends. Drop-ins welcome if space allows. Come early or stay late for a planetarium show and take in our art exhibits to complete the day.

Marksbury Discovery Exhibit | How Things Work: Engineering and Innovation
Art Galleries | 2018 Youth Arts Exhibit, International Children’s Exhibit, Deconstruct-Reconstruct with David Arnold, Sonya Blaydes and Darrell Kincer
Maker’s Space | Electric Sculpture:  Using wire, LED’s and some battery power, make a sculpture that glows. We’ll learn all about circuits and power, building magnificent masterpieces that light up!
Planetarium | 11am: One World, One Sky with Big Bird and Friends 12:15pm + 1:15pm: Earth, Moon, Sun

AM Workshop | Engineering Marvels with Erica Davis | REGISTER HERE
Bring the whole family and learn how to engineer your own marble mazes and straw roller coasters! Have a blast challenging each other and engaging in creative group problem solving.

PM Workshop | Memory Jugs with Sonja Brooks | REGISTER HERE
In this fun and introspective family workshop, we’ll recycle flower vases, jars, or jugs to create a “memory jar” , which is a 3-D, encapsulated version of a scrapbook. Participants are encouraged to bring in a variety of personal memories, found objects, small photos, and meaningful trinkets in order to build your memories “into a bottle”. Create a meaningful gift for someone special.
